Why get involved?

Ever wondered how you could do more to help your own community? Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a new way for people to have a say in how public funds can be used to make a difference.

Local people can become more actively involved in spending decisions by working together to identify new ideas to benefit their community area.

By getting involved you will learn new skills, become a valuable team player, meet new people, build community relations and have fun

More about the fund

Council has opened a special fund of £20,000 for community projects. And who better to ask for creative new ways to build a better future than our local young people!

We are calling on young people aged 12-25  to come up with fresh ideas for projects that will transform local communities for the better.

There are eight Local Growth Areas across Derry and Strabane – Ballyarnett, Foyleside, The Moor, Waterside, Faughan, Sperrin, Strabane Town and The Derg which are covered by Local Community Plans.   Awards (TBC) will be available in each Local Growth Area to deliver the ideas you come up with.  That might be events, projects or programmes covering the themes.”

How it works

Your challenge is to come up with something suited to the needs of your area under one of the following themes:

  • Arts and Culture
  • Community and Environment
  • Education and Skills
  • Equality and Inclusion
  • Safety
  • Sport, Health and Wellbeing

A Youth led Steering Group will review your ideas against the following criteria:

  • Safe
  • Legal
  • Feasible within budget and timeframe
  • Youth centred and in line with one or more of the themes above.

Who can apply?

Anyone aged between 12 to 25 can submit an idea.

To promote cooperation and team building submissions must be from groups of two people or more. The rest is up to you – just choose one or more theme and get brain storming

The successful candidates must be able to deliver their project or event  TBC

How to apply

Applications open on TBC, closing on TBC and should be sent in writing to CommunityPlanning@derrystrabane.com.

Your idea will be checked by the Youth Steering Group to make sure that it meets the criteria – safe, legal, feasible and youth centred in line with themes. You will then be asked to submit a video which captures your idea. Your videos will be shared on-line and will go to a public vote to decide which ideas happen in your area

Videos must be submitted by ??? Public voting opening TBC
